A Middle Eastern Fable Makes a Difference in a Girl's Life

Sugar In Milk

Nothing had changed and yet everything had. These are the words of a young girl who had come to realize that sometimes change begins within us before our surroundings can become better. The hero of this story is never named. She has emigrated to the United States and misses her parents, even all her family. Living with her aunt and uncle, she complains of the misery she feels at being so out of place, unaccepted and rejected by the other young people in her school and community.

A very wise aunt tells her a fable set in the girl’s homeland.

She could relate to the setting and customs which led to a new understanding in what it means to adjust to a new life. The title of this beautifully illustrated book is Sugar in Milk by Thrity Umrigar and illustrated by Khon Le. As you can guess from the book title, a little sweetness added to life can make all the difference. This book with accompanying fable could be helpful for anyone moving into a new environment. It is also a good reminder to be sensitive to anyone feeling out of place and unaccepted.
Sometimes, we must be willing to give as well as receive good intentions from others.
